The 2018 IIHF World Championship begins on Friday in Denmark and the tournament isn’t waiting long to pin two of hockey’s biggest rivals against each other.

Neighbors Canada and the United States will renew their bad blood when the two countries meet to open preliminary round play at Jyske Bank Boxenat in Herning, Denmark.

The United States team, led by Blackhawks star Patrick Kane, looks to improve upon its 2017 tournament, which featured a run of six consecutive wins in Group A play, but ended on a sour note with a quarterfinal loss to Finland.

Canada, like Team USA, finished 6-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in the preliminary round at the 2017 tournament, but had more success in the knockout stages of the competition. The Canadians advanced all the way to their third straight gold-medal game, where they fell to Sweden, 2-1, in a shootout.

This time around, Canada will have more firepower in its lineup, highlighted by Oilers star and 2017 Hart Trophy winner Connor McDavid, who will be captaining his country for the first time ever.
