NBA Finals 2018

The 2018 NBA Finals could come to a rather underwhelming conclusion tonight if the Golden State Warriors complete their sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 4. For the second straight year, the Warriors have their opponent on the ropes following a trio of victories to open their championship tilt. Cleveland’s chance at a fairytale ending seems especially bleak given there is no historical precedent of a team coming back from an 0-3 deficit. There have been 131 such instances where a franchise dropped three games in a row to start a best-of-seven showdown in the NBA Playoffs, but only three of those squads even managed to make things interesting by forcing a Game 7, while not a single one would go on to win the series.

Oddsmakers aren’t expecting the Cavaliers to defy history, let alone avoid a sweep. Vegas is once again projecting a Warriors “W”, opening the defending champs as a five-point favorite for Game 4. The series line shifted further in the franchise’s favor in wake of its gritty Game 3 triumph and the odds have now reached a borderline ridiculous figure at -20000. That means bettors would have to risk $200 to win a single dollar on the Warriors raising the Larry O’Brien Trophy this year, while those that still believe in Cleveland can net $40 for each $1 wagered at the current +4000 odds. Tonight’s point spread is the same as it was for Game 3, a contest that Cleveland had a realistic opportunity to win before collapsing down the stretch. The Cavs once again became victim to a coldblooded, clutch performance from Kevin Durant. The 35-foot dagger that the superstar splashed to put the game away was eerily similar to his backbreaking three-pointer in Game 3 of the 2017 NBA Finals. Even with LeBron James giving everything he can muster, the Cavs are simply outclassed by their foe in this series. Will Cleveland find a way to come up with at least one win in front of the home fans at Quicken Loan Arena this evening, or will the Dubs celebrate their third title in four years on the floor of their bitter rival?
